How to Take a Good Photo for Face Shape Analysis

When a face-shape result feels wrong, the photo is the first input to review. FaceFit can only interpret the proportions that are visible. A high camera angle, hidden jawline, strong filter, or very close lens can change those proportions before analysis even begins. You do not need studio lighting or a professional camera. You need one clear, front-facing photo that shows the forehead area, cheekbones, jawline, and chin without strong distortion. This guide explains how to create that photo and how the Upload Quality Gate decides whether to block, warn, or pass an upload.
Quick answer
Use soft, even light. Keep the camera at eye level and roughly an arm's length away. Look directly at the lens with a relaxed expression. Keep one person in frame, show the full face, move hair away from the jaw, and remove sunglasses or heavy filters.

Why angle changes the apparent face shape
Camera position changes perspective. When the phone is held above eye level, the forehead and upper face sit closer to the lens while the jaw moves farther away. The face may look more tapered or longer. A low angle does the reverse: the jaw can look broader and the lower face more dominant.
Turning the head introduces a second problem. The cheek closer to the camera appears larger, while the far jaw edge becomes partially hidden. Even a small turn can make width distribution look uneven.
For the analysis photo:
- Place the camera near eye height.
- Keep the bridge of the nose centered rather than pointing left or right.
- Keep the chin neutral—not lifted and not pressed toward the chest.
- Check that both jaw edges are visible before taking the photo.
A mirror selfie can work only if the head remains straight and the phone is not held far to one side. A direct camera photo is usually easier to control.
Why distance matters as much as angle
Very close phone cameras exaggerate the parts of the face nearest the lens. The center of the face can appear larger while the ears and outer jaw recede. This changes the relationship between cheekbone width, jaw width, and face length.
Move the camera farther away and use a normal crop instead of pushing the lens close to the face. Around an arm's length is a practical starting point. A modest crop is fine if the full face remains sharp.
Light should reveal both sides of the face
Soft frontal light is useful because it keeps the boundary of both cheeks and both sides of the jaw visible. A window in front of you often provides enough light. If the window is directly to one side, rotate your body so the light becomes more even.
Avoid:
- a bright lamp behind the head, which can turn the face into a dark silhouette;
- harsh side light that hides one cheek or jaw edge;
- patterned shadows from blinds;
- beauty filters that smooth or reshape the jaw, chin, or cheeks;
- colored light that makes the face boundary difficult to distinguish from the background.
The background does not need to be white. It only needs enough contrast for the outline of the face and hair to remain clear.
Forehead, cheekbones, jawline, and chin must be readable
FaceFit does not need every strand of hair removed from the forehead. It does need enough of the upper-face boundary to estimate width distribution. Heavy bangs, a low hat, or hair covering the temples can make the forehead appear narrower than it is.
Cheekbone presence helps explain where the face is widest. Hair crossing the cheeks can hide that relationship. The jawline and chin are equally important because they separate a soft lower contour from a broad, angular, or strongly tapered one.
If long hair falls across the jaw, tuck it behind the ears for the analysis photo. Remove a mask. If possible, remove glasses so thick rims do not cover the cheekbone or brow area. You can put them back on when comparing recommendations in the glasses module.
The Upload Quality Gate: Blocked, Warning, or Pass
The Upload Quality Gate checks whether the photo provides enough usable information before the report interprets the face. It protects the result from inputs that would make the explanation look more certain than the photo allows.

Blocked
The upload should stop when the system cannot perform a responsible comparison. Examples include no face found, more than one prominent face, a side profile, severe blur, a face that is too small in the image, or major obstruction across the face.
The right next step is not to guess. It is to explain the specific issue and request a new photo.
Warning
A warning means the photo may still produce a useful profile, but one condition could reduce confidence in part of the explanation. Examples include mild shadow, a small head turn, partial hair coverage, a strong smile, glasses covering part of the brow, or moderate image compression.
The user should be able to continue after understanding the limitation. The report can also mention which feature may be less reliable.
Pass
A pass means the photo is front-facing, sufficiently clear, contains one usable face, and shows the important boundaries with reasonable lighting. It does not mean the result is a medical measurement or guaranteed to be exact. It means the input is suitable for an interpretive style report.
When should you upload again?
Upload a new photo when:
- the quality gate blocks the current image;
- the report says the jaw, forehead, or chin is not clearly visible;
- two ordinary photos give noticeably different outlines because one uses a strong angle;
- the result does not resemble you and the current photo uses a filter or close lens;
- you want to compare a warning result with a cleaner input.

A practical setup you can copy
Stand facing a window or a softly lit wall. Hold the phone at eye level, about an arm's length away. Use the standard camera mode without a beauty filter. Keep the head upright, relax the mouth, tuck hair behind the ears, and confirm that the chin is inside the frame.

- “A portrait photo is automatically suitable.” Portrait mode can blur the outer jaw or hair boundary.
- “The closer the camera, the more accurate the result.” Close lenses often create more distortion.
- “A beauty filter only changes skin.” Some filters subtly reshape the jaw, eyes, cheeks, or chin.
- “Glasses never matter.” Thin frames may be fine, but thick rims and tinted lenses can cover useful areas.
- “A pass means absolute accuracy.” A pass means the photo is usable, not that face shape is an exact scientific measurement.
